Bharatiya Janata Party national vice-president Ram Madhav will visit Jammu on Tuesday for a series of organisational meetings and a press conference on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, the party’s Jammu and Kashmir unit said on Monday.
The visit comes amid political developments in the Union Territory, including reported differences within the ruling National Conference following its recent Cabinet expansion.
Madhav’s political role in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly his involvement in negotiating the BJP-PDP coalition government in 2015, has fuelled speculation about the purpose of his visit.
However, BJP chief spokesperson Sunil Sethi rejected suggestions that the visit was linked to possible government formation or efforts to exploit differences within the NC.
“He will be coming tomorrow morning. Initially there will be some party meetings. Later, he will be addressing media at 1 pm at BJP headquarters, Trikuta Nagar, Jammu,” Sethi said.
He said the meetings would focus on organisational matters, while the press conference would address what the BJP described as confusion and misinformation surrounding the SIR exercise.
Sethi said similar press briefings were being held by the party across states and Union Territories as part of a nationwide campaign.
On whether the BJP would discuss the political situation within the NC, Sethi said the party was monitoring developments but had taken no decision on making any political move.
He also ruled out government formation as an agenda for Madhav’s visit, describing reports suggesting otherwise as speculation.
Madhav played a key role in negotiations that led to the formation of the BJP-PDP coalition government in 2015 under an Agenda of Alliance. He worked on the agreement with then PDP leader and former finance minister Haseeb Drabu.
He was also the BJP’s election in-charge for the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections and was appointed national vice-president earlier this year under party president Nitin Nabin.
The visit coincides with the expected resignation of Srinagar Lok Sabha MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi from Parliament and the National Conference on November 3.
