Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday called for deeper cooperation among BRICS nations on security issues ranging from terrorism and cyber threats to emerging technologies, saying the grouping has an increasingly important role to play in an evolving global order.

Speaking during a meeting with National Security Advisers and senior security officials from BRICS countries, Modi said member states should strengthen collaboration to address common challenges affecting international peace and stability.

“In a changing global landscape, BRICS has a vital role in deepening security cooperation and addressing shared challenges,” Modi said in a statement posted on social media platform X.

The prime minister highlighted terrorism, cybersecurity and technological risks as areas requiring coordinated action among member nations.

He said India’s upcoming chairmanship of the bloc would focus on practical cooperation and advancing the interests of developing countries.

Modi reiterated India’s commitment to promoting the priorities of the Global South and contributing to what he described as a safer, more secure and inclusive international order.

BRICS – originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – has expanded in recent years and increasingly positions itself as a platform representing emerging economies and developing nations.

India is expected to use its chairmanship to push initiatives related to economic cooperation, technology, security and development priorities for countries of the Global South, officials have said.

The meeting took place amid growing geopolitical tensions and heightened international focus on cybersecurity, transnational terrorism and the regulation of rapidly evolving technologies.
