Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday called for reconciliation and an end to political violence after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swept to its first-ever assembly election victory in West Bengal, urging parties to focus on the state’s future rather than retaliation.
Addressing party workers at the BJP headquarters following victories in West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry, PM Modi said the result marked the end of a politics defined by fear and violence in the eastern state.
“Today, when the BJP has won, the talk should not be of revenge, but of change; not of fear, but of the future,” he said, appealing to all political parties in West Bengal to abandon what he described as a long-standing culture of political violence.
PM Modi said the elections in West Bengal were notable for being conducted peacefully, in contrast to previous polls that were marred by clashes and fatalities.
He said that no deaths were reported during voting this time.
In a wide-ranging speech lasting nearly 50 minutes, PM Modi said opposition parties including the Congress and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) had been “punished” by voters for opposing the women’s reservation bill.
He also criticised the Samajwadi Party, saying it would face similar consequences in future elections.
Senior BJP leaders including party president Nitin Nabin and union ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh were present at the event.
PM Modi said the election outcomes reflected public trust in India’s democratic system and in what he called “politics of performance” and stability.
He highlighted high voter participation by women, describing it as a defining feature of the polls.
“Women power is progressing rapidly towards building a developed India,” he said, accusing opposition parties of obstructing legislation aimed at enhancing women’s political representation.
Referring to regional results, PM Modi said the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) had secured a third consecutive term in Assam and retained support in Puducherry, where he reiterated commitments to youth and fishing communities.
He also pointed to the BJP-NDA’s growing footprint across India, saying the alliance was now in power in more than 20 states.
PM Modi invoked the legacy of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, saying the BJP’s victory in West Bengal would bring “peace to his soul”.
Following the address, PM Modi held a meeting with senior party leaders including J P Nadda to review the results and discuss next steps, party officials said.
