National Conference (NC) President Farooq Abdullah said on Thursday that his party would continue protesting until Jammu and Kashmir’s constitutional rights are restored, describing the changes introduced by New Delhi in August 2019 as unconstitutional.
“Everyone knows that what happened on August 5, 2019, is unconstitutional,” Abdullah told reporters. “The protests will continue.”
The comments came a day after demonstrations and commemorative events marked the seventh anniversary of the revocation of Article 370, which stripped the former state of its special constitutional status and led to its division into the federally administered territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
The National Conference and the People’s Democratic Party staged protests across the region on Wednesday, demanding restoration of the former state’s special status.
Asked about his policy on restoring statehood, Abdullah said the National Conference had a defined position on the issue.
He declined to comment on remarks made by Union Minister Giriraj Singh about PDP president Mehbooba Mufti.
