Srinagar, April 5
The National Conference on Sunday sharply criticised Waheed Para, accusing him of making derogatory and inappropriate remarks against senior party leader and cabinet minister Sakina Masood Itoo.
In statements issued by the offices of the party’s provincial presidents, Showkat Ahmad Mir and Rattan Lal Gupta, the party described Para’s comments as “vile, misogynistic and completely unparliamentary,” and said they reflected poorly on his party, the People’s Democratic Party.
The NC said the remarks amounted to a “tirade” against a senior woman legislator and accused Para of prioritising personal attacks over substantive political debate.
The party called on the Assembly Speaker to take “stern and uncompromising” action and demanded Para’s suspension from the House in the next session.
“The House is a forum for policy, debate and public welfare, not a platform for personal attacks,” the statement said.
The party also said the episode raised broader concerns about standards of conduct in public life, adding that such behaviour undermines the dignity of legislative institutions.
Reaffirming its position, the NC said it would not tolerate what it described as toxic or disrespectful conduct, and called for greater accountability among elected representatives.
There was no immediate response from Para or his party.
