Union Ministry of Home Affairs has scheduled a meeting of its sub-committee with representatives from Ladakh on September 9 in New Delhi, as talks continue over political and governance issues in the Union Territory.
Chief Secretary of Ladakh Ashish Kundra confirmed the meeting, saying the ministry had fixed the date as part of the ongoing dialogue on strengthening democratic processes in the region.
An official communication from the ministry asked the Ladakh administration to inform members of the sub-committee and communicate their confirmation.
The talks are expected to cover demands relating to legislative, executive and financial powers and constitutional safeguards for Ladakh.
The meeting comes amid continued engagement between central officials and representatives of the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance.
The two groups recently submitted a joint memorandum to the Ladakh administration outlining their demands, including an empowered elected body at the Union Territory level and the withdrawal of cases against people affected by the September 24, 2025 incident.
They have also sought compensation for victims and their families.
The Kargil Democratic Alliance has backed a proposed Kargil-Leh padyatra organised by the Socialist Party and other civil and political organisations to press for statehood, inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and justice for those affected by the September 2025 violence.
According to the organisers, the march will begin in Kargil on September 10 and proceed to Haniskot.
The Kargil Democratic Alliance will coordinate that section, while the Leh Apex Body will coordinate the march from Haniskot to Leh.
The march is scheduled to culminate in Leh on September 24 with a candlelight vigil marking the first anniversary of the events of September 24, 2025.
Four people were killed and hundreds injured or detained during protests in Leh on that date, according to organisers.
The organisers said the march would reiterate demands for justice and accountability and seek a resolution to the political and constitutional issues raised by groups in Ladakh.
The Kargil Democratic Alliance said the march was not directed against any individual or political party and described it as a peaceful movement seeking what it called the democratic and constitutional rights of the people of Ladakh.
Members of parliament, civil society representatives, activists, and other public figures from across India are expected to join the march.
Social activist Sandeep Pandey is among those expected to participate.
