Paraguay 0-1 France
France goal: Mbappe pen (69)

Srinagar, July 5
When France needed a breakthrough, Kylian Mbappé once again answered the call.
The French captain converted a second-half penalty to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay on Saturday, sending Les Bleus into the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals and extending his remarkable scoring run in the tournament.
Mbappé’s 69th-minute strike settled a tense Round of 16 contest at Philadelphia Stadium and earned France a meeting with Morocco in Boston on July 9.
It was another clinical moment from one of the game’s biggest stars in a match where chances were scarce.
Fresh off its dramatic penalty-shootout victory over Germany, Paraguay arrived with a clear defensive plan and executed it superbly for much of the afternoon. The South Americans sat deep, closed passing lanes and frustrated a France side that dominated possession but found little room to operate in the final third.
France’s first-half attacks were largely reduced to speculative efforts from distance, none of which seriously troubled Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill.
The pressure gradually increased after halftime.
Ousmane Dembélé came close after latching onto a quickly taken corner, firing into the side netting, while Gill produced an outstanding full-stretch save to deny Manu Koné’s powerful long-range drive as France searched for an opening.
The decisive moment arrived in the 69th minute.
After a VAR review, the referee awarded France a penalty when Désiré Doué was ruled to have been brought down inside the area. Mbappé stepped up with trademark composure, sending Gill the wrong way from the spot to score his seventh goal of the tournament.
The strike moved Mbappé level with Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot, though the France forward holds the edge on assists. It also left him just one goal shy of matching Messi’s all-time World Cup tally of 20.
France comfortably managed the closing stages, denying Paraguay any clear route back into the contest and securing another knockout victory built on patience as much as quality.
While it lacked the attacking fireworks often associated with Didier Deschamps’ side, France once again found the decisive moment through its biggest star.
Now another stern examination awaits.
Morocco, fresh from a commanding 3-0 victory over Canada, stands between France and another World Cup semi-final as Mbappé continues to drive Les Bleus’ pursuit of a third world title.
