Jammu and Kashmir Assembly opposition leader Sunil Sharma called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Saturday and discussed security, development, and issues related to the ongoing Assembly session, the BJP said.
The meeting came a day after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah moved a resolution in the J&K Assembly seeking the immediate restoration of full statehood.
According to a BJP statement, Sharma briefed Shah on the security situation, law and order, development initiatives and public concerns.
He also raised the issue of higher salaries for Special Police Officers (SPOs), saying the matter was at an advanced stage and seeking its early resolution.
The statement did not specifically mention the Assembly’s statehood resolution or the BJP’s demand following its passage.
The BJP had opposed the resolution in the Assembly and later called for the dismissal of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah-led government, alleging that the resolution went beyond the demand for statehood.
BJP legislators have objected in particular to the resolution’s reference to an autonomy resolution passed by the erstwhile J&K Assembly in 2000.
Sharma has also previously said a proposal to increase the remuneration of SPOs had been sent by Police Headquarters to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The BJP statement said Shah reiterated the federal government’s commitment to peace and development in Jammu and Kashmir and assured continued support on issues concerning the union territory.
Sharma thanked Shah for his support on security, development and public welfare issues, it said.
