Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha called on residents on Saturday to work towards building a peaceful and prosperous Jammu and Kashmir, while urging greater emphasis on women, youth, jobs and sustainable development.
Sinha unfurled the national flag at Lok Bhavan in Srinagar on the 80th Independence Day and paid tribute to the freedom fighters and soldiers whose sacrifices secured India’s independence.
He also expressed condolences for civilians who died in natural disasters in Jammu and Kashmir during the year.
“Let us strive to realize their cherished dreams of building a peaceful, prosperous Jammu and Kashmir and a great nation,” Sinha said, calling for integrity in public life and protection of the country’s hard-earned freedom.
The LG said India had the potential to emerge as a global leader but stressed that citizens would need to work together to build an inclusive society focused on the public interest and support for vulnerable sections.
He called for balanced economic growth and greater economic empowerment of women, as well as initiatives aimed at creating employment and expanding opportunities for young people.
Sinha also linked sustainable development to efforts to restore heritage sites, conserve ancient monuments and undertake large-scale afforestation.
He urged citizens to contribute to the vision of a self-reliant Jammu and Kashmir and a developed India by 2047.
Transparency and accountability in governance were essential to that objective, he said.
Sinha congratulated J&K Police and Central Armed Police Forces personnel who received gallantry medals on Independence Day and praised sportspersons for achievements that had brought recognition to the region.
He urged residents to renew their commitment to serving the nation with greater dedication.
A ceremonial police contingent presented the national salute during the event.
