A migrant worker from Chhattisgarh died in a hospital on Saturday after being critically wounded in a militant attack in south Kashmir, taking the death toll from the incident to two, officials said.
Bhupinder Kumar succumbed to his injuries at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences in Srinagar, a day after militants shot him and another brick kiln worker at close range in Kilam village of Kulgam district.
The other victim, Deepak, died at the scene.
Kumar was initially taken to Government Medical College in Anantnag, where he underwent emergency surgery before being shifted to SKIMS for specialised treatment.
The bodies were taken to the Police Control Room in Kashmir for medico-legal procedures before the last rites were conducted at Kilam.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha condemned the killings and directed security forces to intensify operations against those responsible.
Security forces continued search operations in Kilam and neighbouring areas on Saturday, deploying additional personnel to seal possible escape routes. Officials said patrols, surveillance and searches had been expanded across vulnerable parts of south Kashmir.
The attack was the second militant incident in south Kashmir in about 10 days and the first targeted killing of migrant workers in the Valley since October 2024, according to the supplied report.
The killings have renewed concerns over the security of migrant labourers, with the report saying more than 25 migrant workers have been killed in targeted attacks across Kashmir over the past six years.
