Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing accelerated development due to sustained central government funding for flood restoration and infrastructure projects, a local MLA said on Tuesday.
Sham Lal Sharma, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) representing Jammu North, made the remarks while laying the foundation stone for a drainage project in the Patoli Brahmana area of Jammu.
The project, estimated at Rs 25.5 million, will be executed by the Urban Environmental Engineering Department and aims to address long-standing issues of waterlogging and sanitation in Ward No 65, officials said.
It includes construction of a drainage network and diversion of wastewater to prevent untreated discharge from flowing into the Ranbir Canal, a key water source for irrigation in the region.
Sharma said the initiative was part of a broader push to upgrade urban infrastructure in the constituency, with six such projects approved.
“Efficient drainage and sanitation systems are vital for public health and environmental protection,” he said, adding that the project would improve hygiene standards and living conditions for residents.
Locals welcomed the move, officials said, describing it as a long-pending demand.
The MLA said continued financial support from the federal government was enabling timely execution of key projects and contributing to overall development in the region.
