Opposition and treasury bench lawmakers in Jammu and Kashmir’s legislative assembly on Tuesday jointly raised concerns over delays faced by civilians travelling on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.
PDP legislator Waheed-ur-Rehman Para urged the government to take up the issue with the Unified Headquarters and review restrictions imposed during security convoys, the annual pilgrimage and the tourist season.
Para said travellers were frequently stopped for 10 to 15 minutes and argued that security measures should not result in discrimination or unnecessary hardship.
He said residents who had given land for the highway should not face repeated restrictions while travelling through their own region.
NC legislator Abdul Majid Larmi also raised the issue, saying students, patients and other commuters were being affected by delays between Qazigund and Srinagar.
Some travellers, he said, had missed examinations and flights because of stoppages.
Lawmakers said security requirements should be maintained while ensuring civilian movement and dignity were not unnecessarily affected.
