New Delhi, July 14

India on Tuesday summoned a senior Iranian diplomat and lodged a strong protest over attacks on two commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz that killed an Indian seafarer and injured 10 others.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it was “deeply concerned” by the attacks on MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa, which together had 30 Indian crew members on board.

The ministry said one Indian aboard MT Al Bahiyah was killed and another injured, while nine Indians on MT Mombasa were wounded, including two seriously.

“We extend our deepest condolences” to the family of the deceased and wish “speedy recovery” to those injured, the MEA said.

India said its mission in the UAE was coordinating with local authorities to assist the affected crew members.

The ministry said it had summoned the deputy chief of mission at the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi and lodged a “strong protest” over the attacks.

India “strongly condemns” attacks targeting commercial shipping and seafarers, the ministry said, calling for an “immediate cessation of violence” and a return to dialogue.

It also urged an end to attacks on commercial vessels and civilian infrastructure to restore “free and unimpeded navigation” through international waterways in accordance with international law.
