Home Minister Amit Shah will chair a high-level conference this week to review border security, with particular focus on the sensitive frontier regions of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and West Bengal, senior officials said on Tuesday.

The meeting, scheduled for July 9 in New Delhi, will bring together directors general of police from border states, senior officers from the Ministry of Home Affairs and superintendents of police from districts adjoining India’s international borders.

Officials said police chiefs from Jammu and Kashmir’s 10 border districts would participate in the conference, with some joining through video link. Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat will also attend.

The discussions are expected to focus on strengthening border management, preventing infiltration, curbing cross-border smuggling and improving coordination among security agencies deployed along India’s frontiers.

Jammu and Kashmir Police operate a network of Border Police Posts that function as secondary security layers behind the international border and the Line of Control, supporting the Army and the Border Security Force in counter-infiltration operations.

Senior officials said Shah is expected to reiterate the federal government’s policy of “zero tolerance” towards terrorism, cross-border infiltration, narcotics trafficking, illegal arms smuggling and organised crime.

The conference is also expected to examine intelligence gathering, surveillance technologies and inter-agency coordination aimed at preventing militant infiltration into Jammu and Kashmir.

Officials familiar with the preparations said participating states would be asked to identify operational gaps affecting border security and submit detailed action plans to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The meeting follows a series of recent security reviews chaired by Shah involving the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Border Security Force (BSF), the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and other central armed police forces.

During those meetings, Shah directed security agencies to strengthen the border grid through greater use of technology, improve intelligence collection and maintain close operational coordination in counter-terrorism operations.

Officials said the home minister is also expected to review measures aimed at improving housing, healthcare and training facilities for security personnel deployed in remote border areas.

The conference comes as the government continues efforts to strengthen counter-infiltration measures in J&K while targeting terror financing networks and cross-border smuggling routes that security agencies say support militant activities.
