Heavy rain lashed Jammu and surrounding areas on Tuesday, with showers alternating with bright sunshine, while police and disaster response teams searched for a 27-year-old man reported missing near the Tawi riverfront.

The Tawi and Chenab rivers remained below their respective warning levels, officials said, but authorities maintained safety advisories urging people to stay away from riverbanks and other water bodies.

Waterlogging was reported in several low-lying areas of the city.

The Meteorological Department forecast no major weather activity for Wednesday but said early morning monsoon showers could occur in parts of the Jammu region, with thunderstorms possible at isolated locations across Jammu and Kashmir later in the day.

Scattered showers were also expected on July 30, particularly in the Jammu region.

The department warned that even without prolonged rainfall, intense localised downpours could trigger flash floods. Isolated cloudbursts, landslides and shooting stones could not be ruled out in vulnerable hilly areas, it said.

Meanwhile, police launched a search for a youth identified as Ravi, 27, of Jammu, who went missing after visiting the Tawi riverfront with two friends late on Monday.

According to his friends, Ravi had gone away to attend nature’s call but did not return.

Police and State Disaster Response Force personnel began a search after being informed, but he remained untraced as of Tuesday evening.

An investigation was under way, police said.
