Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir issued fresh safety warnings after the weather department forecast heavy showers in parts of the Jammu region, raising the risk of flash floods, cloudbursts and landslides in vulnerable areas.

The Meteorological Department has forecast intermittent rain between July 31 and August 3, with the spell potentially continuing until August 4. Heavy showers are likely in parts of the Jammu division, particularly Rajouri, Poonch, the Chenab Valley, Jammu, Reasi and Udhampur.

The department said widespread continuous rain was not expected, but intense localised downpours could trigger flash floods, while isolated cloudbursts, landslides and falling rocks remained possible in hilly areas.

The warning came after heavy evening rain triggered flash flooding in parts of Rajouri and Poonch, including Mendhar in Poonch district. Several areas of Jammu also received brief heavy showers.

Authorities urged residents, particularly those living in low-lying areas and near rivers and other water bodies, to remain alert.

The latest rainfall has renewed concerns in Rajouri and Poonch, which suffered extensive damage in flash floods on July 19. The floods killed people and damaged homes, roads, bridges, schools and essential infrastructure, with some families still displaced.

Meanwhile, the body of a young man who went missing after visiting the Tawi riverfront with two friends on Monday evening was recovered on Thursday after a three-day search involving police, the State Disaster Response Force and the National Disaster Response Force.

Police were investigating the circumstances surrounding his disappearance. The body was sent to Government Medical College hospital in Jammu for a post-mortem examination.
