Flash floods triggered by intense rainfall disrupted road links and drinking water supply in parts of south Kashmir on Tuesday, a day after cloudbursts struck the upper reaches of Pahalgam, officials said.
Heavy rain inundated residential areas in Kulgam district, where residents said torrents of water swept through streets and entered several homes.
“The rain was so intense that water entered homes within minutes,” one resident said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties.
In neighbouring Anantnag district, the Khanabal-Pahalgam road remained partially disrupted after flash floods damaged the Batkoot-Langnai bridge on Monday.
Officials said floodwaters carrying mud, rocks and debris damaged the structure and briefly halted traffic before temporary arrangements restored vehicle movement. Repair work was continuing.
The flooding also interrupted drinking water supply to Anantnag town and nearby areas after muddy water from the Lidder River became unsuitable for treatment.
The Jal Shakti Department said multiple cloudbursts in the upper reaches of Pahalgam sharply increased turbidity levels at the Bumzoo water treatment plant, forcing authorities to suspend operations.
Water supply to Anantnag town and surrounding areas, including Uranhal, Batengoo, Khandipora, Donipawa and Mattan, will remain suspended until water quality improves, the department said.
Officials urged residents to use available water sparingly and said supply would resume once turbidity levels returned to normal.
A separate cloudburst was also reported in Shopian district, but officials said there were no reports of casualties or damage.
Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert as intermittent rainfall is forecast over the coming days.
