Egypt reached uncharted territory on Friday, holding their nerve in a penalty shootout to defeat Australia 4-2 after a 1-1 draw and claim the nation’s first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout victory.

The Pharaohs, who had already celebrated their maiden World Cup win against New Zealand in the group stage, added another landmark moment at Dallas Stadium as Hossam Abdelmaguid converted the decisive spot kick after Australia’s Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington failed from 12 yards.

The victory sends Hossam Hassan’s unbeaten side into the Round of 16, where they will meet defending champions Argentina in Atlanta.

Egypt struck first after an energetic opening. Australia nearly grabbed an early lead when Cristian Volpato rattled the crossbar with a long-range effort, but it was Emam Ashour who broke the deadlock in the 13th minute.

After his initial effort was blocked following a set piece, Karim Hafez recycled the ball into the area, and Ashour stooped to head home at the far post. The midfielder, who arrived in North America without an international goal, now has two at the World Cup.

Australia gradually settled into the contest but struggled to create clear opportunities before halftime, while losing full-back Jordan Bos to a knee injury. Their best spell arrived after the restart, moments after Egypt squandered a golden chance when Omar Marmoush raced through on goal only to roll his finish wide.

The Socceroos capitalized almost immediately.

Aiden O’Neill’s dangerous free kick forced defender Mohamed Hany into an unfortunate own goal in the 55th minute, leveling the match and giving Australia fresh belief.

Both teams traded opportunities as the game stretched into extra time. Egypt came closest to finding a winner when Patrick Beach produced a superb one-handed save to deny Rami Rabia’s powerful header from a Mohamed Salah cross. Salah, declared fit despite concerns over a hamstring issue, later created another opening for Haissem Hassan, only for Harry Souttar to produce a crucial last-ditch block.

With penalties inevitable, Australia coach Tony Popovic introduced veteran goalkeeper Mat Ryan just before the end of extra time in a gamble that ultimately failed to pay off.

Egypt were flawless from the spot. Salah confidently chipped home a Panenka, while Abdelmaguid buried the winning penalty after Souttar and Herrington missed for Australia, sealing one of the biggest victories in Egyptian football history.

Salah, named Superior Player of the Match, described the triumph as one of the defining moments of his career.

“Today was one of the best days of my life, making history with my country,” Salah said. “I tried to give my best and play when I’m hurt because this is what I do for the country. I’m proud of the boys. I always tell the boys, just enjoy the moment. We can’t take it for granted.”

Midfielder Haissem Hassan reflected on what the achievement meant back home.

“Honestly, it’s incredible, because you know that in Egypt there are 120 million people you’ve made happy today,” Hassan said. “There will be celebrations across the whole country. For every player, when you’re a boy, you dream of ending up like this.”

For Australia, the defeat extended an unwanted record. The Socceroos have now lost all three of their FIFA World Cup knockout appearances, following exits to Italy in 2006 and Argentina in 2022.

“It’s the toughest way to lose a game,” captain Jackson Irvine said. “We gave ourselves the best possible opportunity to do something no Australia team has done before but ultimately we’ve fallen short in a penalty shootout. I’m so proud of every player.”

Egypt’s reward is a blockbuster Round of 16 showdown against Lionel Messi and defending champions Argentina, with another opportunity to extend the most successful World Cup campaign in the nation’s history.
