Srinagar, July 2
Police in Sopore have detained an alleged drug trafficker under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act, saying the move was part of efforts to dismantle narcotics networks in the region.
The detainee, identified as Umar Muhammad Sheikh of Sheikhpora in Tujjar Sharief, Sopore, was taken into preventive custody after authorities alleged he had repeatedly engaged in drug trafficking despite facing legal action in the past.
Police said they prepared a dossier detailing his alleged involvement in narcotics-related offences, following which the competent authority issued a detention order under the PIT-NDPS Act.
After the order was executed, Sheikh was shifted to Central Jail Kot Bhalwal in Jammu, police said.
The preventive detention was intended to prevent habitual offenders from continuing activities linked to the illicit drug trade and to disrupt the narcotics supply chain, police said.
Police reiterated their zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking and appealed to the public to share information about drug-related activities, assuring informants that their identities would be kept confidential.
