Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday said Kashmir’s cultural and historical identity remained incomplete without the return of Kashmiri Pandits, as he inaugurated 1,416 transit accommodation flats for employees recruited under the Prime Minister’s Package.
Speaking at the inauguration of a residential complex at Zewan in Srinagar, Sinha said the return of Kashmiri Pandit families with security, dignity and confidence was essential to restoring the region’s cultural and social heritage.
He said the community had made significant contributions to Kashmir’s literary, spiritual and cultural traditions.
Sinha also inaugurated residential complexes at Kakan Maran in Budgam and Kulangam Bagh in Kupwara through virtual mode.
The three complexes comprise 1416 flats, with 936 at Zewan, 288 at Kulangam Bagh and 192 at Kakan Maran.
The government has sanctioned 6000 flats across 342 blocks at 20 locations in 10 districts of Kashmir under the transit accommodation project. More than 5200 flats have been completed, while over 3800 have been allotted, officials said.
The project was accelerated in 2020, according to the Lieutenant Governor’s office.
Sinha directed officials to complete the remaining work without delay. Additional Chief Secretary, Public Works Department, Anil Kumar Singh said the outstanding flats would be completed by December.
The Lieutenant Governor also stressed the need for uninterrupted water and electricity supplies, adequate security, waste management and an effective grievance-redressal system at the residential complexes.
He acknowledged the contributions of construction workers, engineers, government departments, district administrations, police and security agencies in executing the project.
Senior civil and police officials, including Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Anshul Garg, Inspector General of Police Kashmir Sujit Singh and Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Akshay Labroo, attended the inauguration.
