Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat on Friday ordered intensified counter-militancy operations and stronger coordination among security agencies after reviewing security arrangements in vulnerable parts of the region following a recent attack in Anantnag.

Prabhat reviewed operational preparedness in Magam in Budgam district before chairing a high-level security meeting at the Police Control Room in Kashmir, officials said.

The field review was attended by Inspector General of Police Kashmir V K Birdi, Deputy Inspector General of the Central Kashmir Range Rajiv Pandey, Budgam’s senior police officials and commanders of the Special Operations Group.

The meeting focused on security preparedness, intelligence sharing and measures to strengthen the security grid along vulnerable areas following Wednesday’s militant attack in Anantnag.

The review came hours after Prabhat, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and other senior police officials visited the family of Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi, who was killed in the attack.

At the wider security meeting, attended by senior police and intelligence officials from across Jammu and Kashmir, officers presented assessments of the security situation, emerging threats and operational preparedness.

Prabhat directed officers to intensify area and night domination, particularly in vulnerable and urban areas, to deter militant activity and maintain a visible security presence.

He also ordered tighter security around critical infrastructure and called for improved intelligence gathering and closer coordination between police, security and intelligence agencies.

The police chief instructed officers to step up intelligence-led operations aimed at identifying and dismantling remaining militant networks, stressing the need for seamless coordination to enable rapid responses to threats to public order and security.

Prabhat also highlighted the importance of reliable communications during security operations.

He directed officers to ensure uninterrupted telecommunications and resilient communication networks across police formations.

With the region also facing severe weather, he called for heightened situational awareness and continuous monitoring of emergency preparedness.

Communication systems and coordination at the field level, he said, should remain operational to allow security agencies to respond effectively to emergencies caused by adverse weather.

Prabhat urged officers to remain vigilant and proactive, saying sustained preparedness, coordinated operations and effective policing were essential to maintaining peace and public confidence across Jammu and Kashmir.
