Croatia’s FIFA World Cup campaign was hanging by a thread when they walked onto the pitch at Toronto Stadium on Tuesday night. Ninety tense minutes later, they were still alive, and their legendary captain had another milestone victory to celebrate.

A scrappy but priceless 1-0 win over Panama breathed life into Croatia’s tournament hopes while simultaneously ending Panama’s World Cup journey. The result was far from comfortable, however, as the Croatians were pushed to the limit by a spirited Panama side that refused to bow quietly.

On a night that marked Luka Modric’s 200th international appearance, Croatia needed every ounce of experience and composure they could muster. The 40-year-old midfield maestro once again served as the heartbeat of his team, helping guide them through one of their most difficult tests in recent years.

Panama entered the match knowing they needed a result to keep their dreams alive, and for long stretches they looked the more dangerous side. Their best opportunity arrived midway through the first half when Jose Luis Rodriguez rose powerfully to meet a cross, only to see Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic produce a stunning save that tipped the header onto the crossbar.

The warning signs were clear for Croatia.

Panama’s pace and directness repeatedly unsettled Zlatko Dalic’s men, while Croatia struggled to find rhythm in attack. As the pressure mounted, Livakovic continued to justify his reputation as one of the tournament’s most dependable goalkeepers.

The breakthrough finally arrived nine minutes into the second half.

Josip Stanisic surged down the right flank and delivered a low, inviting cross across the face of goal. Waiting at the far post was substitute Ante Budimir, who calmly tucked home the decisive finish in the 54th minute.

It was a goal Croatia desperately needed.

Three minutes later they nearly doubled their advantage when Marco Pasalic found himself with a golden opportunity, but Panama goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera denied him before watching the rebound fly harmlessly off target.

That miss ensured a nervous finale.

Panama continued to push forward in search of an equaliser and what would have been the nation’s first-ever FIFA World Cup point. Yet despite their determination and enterprise, they found Livakovic in inspired form throughout the evening.

When the final whistle sounded, Panama’s players collapsed to the turf knowing their tournament was over. Croatia, meanwhile, celebrated a victory that could yet define their World Cup campaign.

“We played well. We fought until the end, staying true to our identity,” Panama coach Thomas Christiansen said afterward. “I am proud of my players. They played a great game, we went toe-to-toe with Croatia.”

Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic acknowledged his side had been tested far more than expected.

“I want to congratulate the opponent, who was very good today and gave us a lot of difficulties,” Dalic said. “To be honest, I didn’t expect it to be this difficult. I’m glad we were able to win Luka’s 200th game. He played excellently today, at 40 years of age.”

For Modric, the occasion added another remarkable chapter to an international career that has already become the gold standard in Croatian football. According to FIFA.com, the veteran midfielder has now appeared in each of Croatia’s last 21 FIFA World Cup matches, a streak dating back to the nation’s second group-stage match against Japan in 2006.

Croatia remain third in Group L with three points from two matches, behind England and Ghana, who are level on four points. Panama, still without a point, are mathematically eliminated with one game remaining.

The scoreline may have been narrow, but Croatia will not care. At a World Cup, survival often matters more than style.

And on the night their greatest player reached 200 caps, survival was enough.
