Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday said the autumn session of the Legislative Assembly should be used for meaningful debate on issues affecting people, as the seven-day sitting opened amid noisy protests by BJP lawmakers.
“The Autumn Session … will provide an opportunity for meaningful debate, constructive deliberations and discussion on issues concerning the welfare and aspirations of the people,” the Chief Minister’s Office said in a post on X.
The BJP disrupted Question Hour on the opening day while raising issues including employment, electricity, water and public services.
Members of the treasury benches responded by demanding the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir.
Abdullah, who is also Leader of the House, joined lawmakers in paying tribute to former legislators Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, Dharam Paul and Ghulam Hassan Khan, who died between the previous and current sessions.
The session is scheduled to run for seven days.
