Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday welcomed efforts to end the conflict between the United States and Iran but cautioned that the details of the agreement remained unclear and that its success would depend on developments before the formal signing ceremony later this week.
Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Abdullah said neither the public nor most governments had access to the contents of the agreement announced by US President Donald Trump.
“Neither you nor I know what is in that peace deal. Perhaps the United States, Iran and to some extent Pakistan know what is in it. We will have to wait till Friday,” he said.
The agreement, scheduled to be signed in Switzerland on June 19, is intended to end a 107-day conflict that disrupted global energy markets and heightened concerns about international oil supplies.
Trump said the accord would lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of a US naval blockade imposed during the confrontation.
Abdullah said the international community hoped no developments would emerge before the signing that could derail the peace process.
“We hope that this war stops for good and the Strait of Hormuz is opened,” he said, adding that the losses suffered by Iran during the conflict should not be overlooked.
The proposed agreement has drawn global attention due to its potential impact on regional stability, maritime security and energy markets.
