Jammu, April 6

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday endorsed a magisterial inquiry into a recent encounter in Ganderbal, saying the investigation would help establish the facts and ensure transparency.

CM Omar said he favored a swift process over a more time-consuming judicial probe, even as some legislators from his party, the National Conference, had called for a judicial inquiry during the recently concluded budget session of the Jammu and Kashmir legislature.

“I want that in this matter, without wasting time, the probe should be held and the truth should be brought to the fore,” he told reporters after attending an official event in Jammu. “We should share all the facts with the people.”

He argued that appointing a judicial inquiry can be difficult and slow, citing constraints on the availability of sitting or retired judges.

A magisterial inquiry, he said, offered a more practical and timely alternative.

The inquiry was ordered by the Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, following the encounter in Ganderbal, details of which have prompted calls for an investigation.

Speaking at the event, CM Omar also addressed international developments, expressing concern over escalating tensions in West Asia.

Referring to recent remarks by President Donald Trump regarding Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, he criticised what he described as inappropriate language.

“The dignity of the office must be maintained,” the CM said, without elaborating further.

He said that prolonged conflict in the region could have broader consequences and called for efforts toward de-escalation.

“We hope for an early ceasefire,” CM Omar said, “so that a more peaceful situation can prevail.”

Earlier in his address, he said the government would review the Rehabilitation Assistance Scheme, which replaced earlier provisions for compassionate appointments, acknowledging that the current system had shortcomings.

“There is scope for improvement,” the CM said. “We will revisit the scheme to make the process more efficient and responsive.”
