A cloudburst in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Wednesday sent water, mud and boulders surging through streams and rivulets, prompting authorities to warn residents to stay away from vulnerable waterways as more rain was forecast across Jammu and Kashmir.
Residents of Nandimarg said water levels rose sharply in Namlan nallah and nearby streams after the cloudburst, causing panic and raising fears of flash floods and damage to farmland.
People living close to the waterways left their homes as a precaution, residents said.
There were no immediate reports of deaths or major property damage.
District authorities and disaster management teams were monitoring vulnerable areas, an official said, while residents near streams, drainage channels and low-lying areas were advised to remain vigilant.
The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers at many places from August 6 to 8, with brief intense showers possible at isolated locations.
A more active spell was expected from August 9 to 11, with rain across most of Jammu and Kashmir and the possibility of heavy or intense showers in some districts. Further light rain and thunderstorms were forecast at many places between August 12 and 15.
The weather office warned that intense rainfall could trigger flash floods, landslides and mudslides in vulnerable areas.
A separate cloudburst struck Dazna and Lachipora in Uri in north Kashmir on Tuesday evening, causing a stream to overflow and inundate several structures.
Officials reported no casualties or injuries and said property damage was minor.
