Srinagar, Nov 6
The Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) wing of Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday searched 10 locations across the Valley in connection with an investigation into an alleged network accused of using social media and encrypted messaging platforms to radicalise young people and facilitate recruitment into banned militant organisations.
The searches were conducted in connection with FIR No. 07/2023 registered at Police Station CIK Srinagar under Sections 153-A and 505 of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 13, 18, 18-A and 39 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Officials said the operations covered three locations in Anantnag, two each in Pulwama, Srinagar and Budgam, and one in Baramulla. Local police and revenue officials assisted the CIK teams during the searches.
Nine mobile phones and one laptop were seized for forensic examination. Investigators will analyse the devices to identify communication links, digital footprints and other material that could provide leads about the alleged network.
The case concerns an alleged conspiracy involving local associates operating in coordination with handlers based across the border, officials said.
Investigators have been examining the alleged use of social media platforms to circulate content glorifying terrorism, spread anti-India narratives and encourage young people to join banned militant organisations.
Earlier searches in the same case had also resulted in the recovery of electronic devices and other material described by investigators as incriminating.
Sources familiar with the investigation said the alleged network was linked to efforts by Pakistan-based handlers of Lashkar-e-Taiba and other banned organisations to radicalise and recruit young people through digital platforms.
The latest searches form part of the continuing investigation to identify local contacts, establish communication links and dismantle what officials described as residual support structures.
The seized electronic devices will undergo technical analysis, with investigators seeking to establish their users, contacts and the nature of the material stored or circulated through them.
Further investigation is under way, officials said, adding that additional details could emerge after the forensic examination.
