Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah said on Wednesday the central government was pursuing a multi-pronged strategy to strengthen cooperative institutions in Jammu and Kashmir, with 1611 new cooperative societies registered in the union territory as of July 15.
In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Shah said the new societies included 232 multipurpose Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS), 1339 dairy cooperatives and 40 fishery cooperatives.
He said 761 existing dairy and fishery cooperatives had also been strengthened.
Shah said the Centre was supporting the Jammu and Kashmir administration through measures including computerisation of PACS, expansion of their business activities, formation of new societies, capacity building and institutional support.
He said 708 PACS had been approved for computerisation, with 537 already equipped with hardware and integrated into a common enterprise resource planning platform.
According to Shah, the initiative is aimed at improving transparency, governance and operational efficiency while expanding access to digital services, banking, insurance and agricultural inputs, particularly in remote and border areas.
