SKIMS Medical College has launched a competency-based medical education (CBME) programme, with its first session held this week to familiarise faculty and senior residents with the new teaching approach, officials said.

The session, organised by the Department of Community Medicine, aimed to introduce participants to the principles and practical aspects of CBME, which focuses on outcome-based and skills-oriented learning.

Faculty members and senior residents from pre-clinical and para-clinical departments attended the programme, reflecting an interdisciplinary approach to curriculum reform.

The event opened with an interactive exercise designed to gauge participants’ baseline understanding of CBME, followed by a presentation outlining its conceptual framework, including goal-oriented teaching and systems-based curriculum design.

Participants also took part in reflective writing and feedback exercises to reinforce learning and assess the session’s impact, organisers said.

The programme concluded with a discussion addressing queries and outlining future sessions in the CBME series.

Officials said the initiative marks a step towards strengthening competency-driven teaching practices at the institution.
