Opposition leader Sunil Sharma on Wednesday criticised the National Conference-led government over the autumn session of the Legislative Assembly, describing it as “unfortunate” and saying it had failed to address issues raised by different sections of society.
Addressing reporters on the final day of the session, the BJP legislator said daily wagers, National Health Mission employees, contractual workers, youth engaged under the NYC programme, ASHA and anganwadi workers had expected the government to respond to their concerns.
“We collected issues from every district and raised them, but the NC government remained silent,” Sharma said, questioning Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s description of the session as fruitful.
Sharma also criticised the government over its position on the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, accusing Abdullah of linking the issue to the pre-1953 position and Article 370.
He said the BJP was committed to restoring statehood in line with its stated position, while alleging that the government’s approach had complicated the issue. His remarks reflected the BJP’s opposition to linking statehood with demands concerning Jammu and Kashmir’s former constitutional status.
Sharma questioned the Congress leadership’s position on the resolution concerning statehood and the pre-1953 position, criticising the party for supporting it.
He also questioned the Speaker’s decision to allow the resolution to be introduced, alleging that the Law Department had declared it illegal, and called on the Speaker to resign on moral grounds.
The opposition leader said the BJP had prepared a dossier documenting what it described as unfulfilled government promises and would submit it through the Assembly.
Sharma also alleged that 13,000 government posts remained vacant and accused the government of failing to make efficient use of recruitment agencies, including the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission and the Services Selection Board.
The government has not responded to the allegations in the remarks contained in the statement.
