Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Sunday that BJP-led governments in 21 states would introduce a Uniform Civil Code before the 2029 general election.
Shah was speaking to reporters in Mumbai while outlining the central government’s achievements and the BJP’s 25-year political journey under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“Triple talaq has been abolished, giving Muslim women equal rights. We have introduced the Uniform Civil Code in several states, and I am confident that in the 21 BJP-NDA-ruled states, we will introduce the UCC before 2029,” Shah said.
He said the government had strengthened the criminal justice system through the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and that some states had recorded a 30% increase in conviction rates in a single year.
Shah also said a system was being developed to ensure justice could be delivered within three years.
On national security, he said the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A had been carried out without bloodshed or the firing of a bullet and asserted that Kashmir was now fully integrated with India.
He said the government had also ended five decades of Naxalism and signed more than 14 peace agreements in the northeast, with more than 9,000 people surrendering.
Shah cited surgical strikes, air strikes and Operation Sindoor as evidence of the government’s policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism.
Asked whether the 1951 baseline would be used for implementing the National Register of Citizens in Manipur, Shah said the government was consulting its allies and political parties in the state.
On the identification of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, Shah declined to disclose the methods used by authorities, saying doing so could undermine efforts to detect them.
He reiterated the government’s intention to identify and deport illegal immigrants.
Shah also said he had launched the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan and would visit states as part of the campaign against drugs.
