Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday it was time to implement the women’s reservation law in full, urging political parties to support measures to ensure quotas are in place for the 2029 general and state elections.

In a letter to floor leaders of both houses of parliament ahead of a three-day special session, Modi called for a unified approach to pass necessary amendments to operationalise the legislation, officially known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.

“After extensive deliberations, we have reached the conclusion that the time has now come to implement the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam in its true spirit across the country,” he said.

The law aims to reserve a share of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies, but requires further procedural steps before it can be enforced. Modi said coordinated action by lawmakers would be needed to ensure its rollout ahead of upcoming elections.

The proposed move is expected to be a key focus of the special parliamentary session, with the government seeking broad political backing for its implementation.
