Scientists and medical experts from India and abroad gathered at the University of Kashmir (KU) on Friday for a major cancer research conference aimed at advancing collaboration and innovation in diagnosis and treatment.

The four-day event, which coincides with the 45th annual meeting of the Indian Association for Cancer Research, is being hosted by the university’s Department of Biochemistry at its main campus.

Organisers said the conference is designed as a platform for researchers, clinicians and academics to exchange ideas, present new findings and explore emerging approaches to cancer care, with a focus on improving patient outcomes.

Participants include experts from leading Indian institutions such as the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, the Indian Institute of Science, and the Indian Institutes of Technology, as well as international institutions including the Mayo Clinic, Emory University and Harvard University.

KU Vice Chancellor Nilofer Khan said the conference brings together diverse scientific perspectives to address one of the most pressing health challenges, adding that such engagements are vital for fostering innovation and strengthening research.

Director Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Muhammad Ashraf Ganie, emphasised the importance of collaboration between researchers and clinicians to translate laboratory findings into clinical practice.

Other university officials highlighted the role of interdisciplinary research and sustained academic efforts in tackling complex diseases such as cancer.

Subrata Sinha, president of the association, said advancing cancer research requires continued collaboration, innovation and knowledge sharing.

The conference includes keynote and plenary lectures, thematic sessions and research presentations covering areas such as immunotherapy, genomics, precision oncology and emerging treatments. Students and scholars from across India and abroad are also participating.
