Police arrested seven suspected drug peddlers and seized heroin and cannabis in a series of operations across Samba and Udhampur districts over the past 24 hours, officials said on Tuesday.

The arrests were made in five separate operations as part of an ongoing anti-narcotics drive, Police said.

In Samba district, two men were detained after officers intercepted a motorcycle at a checkpoint on the Namandar-Chak Ram Chand road. Police said about 6.46 gm of a heroin-like substance, locally known as “chitta”, was recovered.

In a separate operation in Vijaypur, police arrested a suspected repeat offender and recovered around 24.09 gm of heroin-like substance, along with a weighing scale and cash. Officials said the accused had a history of involvement in multiple criminal cases.

Another suspect was detained in the Rakh Barotian area, where police said they seized approximately 25.85 gm of heroin-like substance, along with a weighing device and cash.

In neighbouring Udhampur district, two individuals were arrested at a checkpoint in Tikri, where police recovered about 4.07 gm of heroin during a search.

In a separate incident in Basantgarh, police detained a man and seized around 960 gm of cannabis from his possession, officials said.

Cases have been registered under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, and further investigations are underway, police said.

Authorities said the operations were part of intensified efforts to curb drug trafficking and peddling in the region.
