Six people were killed and three injured on Wednesday after a vehicle fell into a deep gorge at Sheindhara in Surankote tehsil of Poonch district, officials said.
The vehicle was travelling from Poonch towards Sheindhara when the driver reportedly lost control, sending it into the gorge.
Residents and authorities launched a rescue operation after the accident. The injured were taken to a nearby health facility.
The six people killed were identified as Zulfat Bi, 30, Masarat Naz, 19, Muhammad Fareed, 20, Muhammad Shafiq, 32, Nazakat Hussain, 32, and Zahoor Ahmed, 23. All were residents of Seri Chohana village.
The injured were identified as Tahir, 22, Muhammad Amin, 24, and 11-year-old Arsalan Ahmed, also residents of Seri Chohana.
Chief Medical Officer Poonch Dr Parvaiz Ahmed Khan said Amin and Arsalan were referred to Government Medical College Jammu because of their critical condition. Tahir was being treated at the local health facility.
Deputy Commissioner Poonch Ashok Kumar Sharma and Additional Deputy Commissioner Tahir Mustafa Malik visited the hospital and reviewed the condition of the injured.
The deputy commissioner directed health officials to provide the best possible treatment and ordered officials to assist the families of those killed.
Police have initiated proceedings, and a further investigation is underway to establish the circumstances of the crash.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed condolences to the families of those killed and directed authorities to assist the affected families and medical care to the injured.
