Two women were killed and five other people, including children, were injured after a vehicle skidded off a mountain road and plunged into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district early on Wednesday, police said.

The accident occurred near Chiral village in Mahore tehsil at around 3:15 a.m. while the vehicle was travelling from Dharmari towards Shajroo.

Police said the driver lost control of the vehicle before it veered off the road and fell into a gorge, causing extensive damage.

Local residents were among the first to reach the scene and joined rescue efforts before police and civil administration teams arrived to evacuate the occupants.

Two passengers died at the scene while five others sustained serious injuries and were taken to the Community Health Centre at Dharmari for treatment.

Police identified the deceased as Razia Begum, 49, and Tahira Parveen, 32, both residents of Chiral village in Reasi district.

Among those injured were Ashiq Hussain, 34, and three children travelling in the vehicle, police said.

Authorities have taken custody of the bodies for legal formalities and launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
