US President Donald Trump said on Sunday he had cancelled a planned military strike against Iran after Tehran and other countries in the region sought more time to work towards a deal that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz and address concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme.

Trump said in a post on Truth Social that the United States had agreed to hold off an attack after being told that the outlines of a deal had been agreed.

The announcement came amid heightened tensions in West Asia and reports that Washington was preparing possible military action against Iran.

Regional mediators, including Qatar and Pakistan, had stepped up diplomatic contacts aimed at preventing further escalation, according to reports.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that Tehran would respond decisively and proportionally to any aggression by the United States, Israel or their allies, following talks with officials from Turkey, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

The US State Department issued a travel advisory urging Americans in the Middle East to consider leaving the region because of the risk of unforeseen escalation.

No formal confirmation of a deal had been announced by Iran or other parties.
