Earthquake tremors were felt across Kashmir late Friday evening, sending residents rushing out of their homes as brief but noticeable shaking triggered anxiety in several areas.
The tremors, which struck at approximately 9:46 p.m., lasted only a few seconds but were widely felt across the region, even as rain continued to fall.
Many residents, startled by the sudden movement, gathered in open spaces, recalling the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity.
Kashmir lies in a seismically active zone and has experienced devastating earthquakes in the past, most notably the 2005 Kashmir earthquake, which caused widespread destruction and significant loss of life, particularly in areas along the Line of Control.
The memory of that disaster continues to shape public reaction, often amplifying fear even during relatively mild tremors.
Friday’s tremor was part of a broader seismic event felt across northern India, including parts of Delhi, Punjab and Haryana, according to initial reports.
Residents in neighboring regions also reported brief shaking.
In Chandigarh, a resident described feeling a “strong jolt” that lasted a few seconds, while another in Zirakpur, Punjab, said the tremor was noticeable but subsided quickly before any evacuation became necessary.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
Officials have not issued any alerts, but authorities typically advise residents in such situations to remain calm and follow standard safety protocols, including moving to open areas and avoiding structures that may be vulnerable during aftershocks.
