Security forces have stepped up frisking, vehicle checks and area-domination operations across Kashmir following a series of security reviews by Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone, Sujit Kumar, officials said on Thursday.
Police and security personnel increased checks at several points in Srinagar, stopping vehicles, checking identity documents and conducting searches at key junctions, approach roads and busy stretches.
Similar measures, including additional deployments, night patrols and checks along inter-district routes, were reported in other parts of the Valley.
Kumar directed district police chiefs to intensify counter-insurgency operations, area domination and checking at vulnerable locations, while strengthening surveillance along inter-district borders, officials said.
Kumar chaired a security review at Police Control Room Kashmir on Wednesday covering Srinagar, Budgam, and Ganderbal.
The DIG Central Kashmir Range, district police chiefs, and other senior officers attended the meeting.
Officials said field commanders briefed Kumar on the security situation and operational readiness in their areas.
He directed them to keep deployments flexible and respond to emerging threats.
The review followed recent security operations in central Kashmir, including an encounter in Budgam’s Ashdar area on September 4 in which police said a Lashkar-e-Taiba militant was killed.
A senior police officer said the Kashmir IGP had also called for round-the-clock vigilance, preventive measures and closer coordination among security forces.
Officials described the increased checks as preventive, intelligence-led measures intended to restrict militants’ movement and their support networks.
The security grid would be adjusted based on intelligence inputs and ground assessments, officers said.
