Srinagar, June 29

Residents of several localities in Sopore have complained of prolonged unscheduled power outages during the ongoing heatwave, saying frequent interruptions in electricity supply have disrupted daily life and caused widespread hardship as temperatures continue to soar.

People living in Takiyabal, Sheikh Sahab, Mahrajpora, Teliyan and adjoining areas said electricity had been unavailable for long hours over the past several days, often without prior notice, leaving households and businesses struggling during one of the hottest spells of the summer.

Residents said repeated outages had become a daily occurrence, affecting domestic life, commercial activity and students preparing for examinations.

They said the situation had become particularly difficult as soaring temperatures made it uncomfortable to remain indoors without fans or cooling appliances, with children, elderly people and patients among those worst affected.

Shopkeepers dealing in perishable goods also reported losses, saying frequent disruptions in power supply were affecting storage and business operations.

Residents said while occasional shutdowns for maintenance or technical reasons were understandable, prolonged and unannounced outages during extreme weather had become increasingly difficult to cope with.

“At a time when temperatures are soaring, uninterrupted electricity is not a luxury but a necessity,” several residents said while appealing to the authorities for immediate intervention.

They urged the Power Development Department to identify the cause of the recurring outages and restore a stable electricity supply at the earliest.

Residents also called on the department to issue advance public notices for scheduled shutdowns so that consumers could make alternative arrangements and minimise inconvenience.

They expressed hope that the authorities would take prompt corrective measures to ensure reliable power supply during the continuing spell of extreme summer heat.
