Rain brought a sharp fall in temperatures across Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, while fresh snow was reported from higher reaches including Gurez, Zojila, and areas near Sonamarg, meteorological officials said.
Fresh snowfall was reported at Kabul Gali in the Tulail Valley of Gurez and at higher sections of Zojila Pass and Zero Point near Sonamarg in Ganderbal district.
Kabul Gali, at an elevation of about 4,167 metres, connects the Tulail Valley with the Mushkoh Valley towards the Drass sector.
Srinagar received 8.2 mm of rain in the 24 hours to Thursday, while Qazigund recorded 13.4 mm, Pahalgam 13 mm and Gulmarg 13.2 mm, according to meteorological data.
Rainfall was heavier in parts of the Jammu division, with Udhampur receiving 117.8 mm, Jammu 112.9 mm and Katra 45.2 mm.
The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar had forecast rain and thunderstorms at many places between September 15 and 17, with isolated thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds possible.
The seven-day forecast indicated generally dry weather from September 18 to September 25, although isolated brief showers could occur.
No major disruption from the snowfall was reported.
Authorities advised travellers to higher areas to remain cautious because changing weather could reduce visibility and make roads slippery.
Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of 12.9 degrees Celsius on September 16, the lowest in the city this month.
The maximum temperature in Srinagar was 26.8 degrees Celsius on Thursday. Pahalgam recorded 21.6 degrees, Gulmarg 17.6, Qazigund 24.2, Kupwara 27.5 and Kokernag 24 degrees.
Jammu recorded a maximum of 31.4 degrees Celsius, while Banihal recorded 21.8 degrees, Batote 20.8, Katra 30, and Bhaderwah 19.6 degrees.
