Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were detained by Delhi Police on Wednesday after they joined opposition leaders in a sit-in protest near a central Delhi hotel.

The two were among several opposition MPs and leaders heading by bus towards Jantar Mantar for a planned protest when police stopped them from proceeding further.

The protesters then sat down at a roundabout near the Shangri-La hotel. Priyanka Gandhi joined women leaders on the road while carrying a copy of the Constitution.

Police personnel moved in and removed Rahul Gandhi, carrying him to a waiting police bus.

Congress leaders Amarinder Singh, Raja Warring, and Udai Bhanu Chib climbed onto the bus, while Mumtaz Patel sat on its bonnet.

Women police officers subsequently removed Priyanka Gandhi and other women protesters from the road and placed them in buses.

Several other opposition MPs were also detained.

The leaders had earlier met for lunch at a restaurant in central Delhi before travelling to the protest site.
