New Delhi, Oct 06
Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were among about 250 people detained by Delhi Police on Tuesday night after an eight-hour protest inside the Akashvani Bhawan premises.
The protesters had been stopped from marching to the Election Commission’s office, about 300 metres away, according to the report.
Police sources said about 50 members of parliament were among those detained. They were being taken to New Police Lines at Kingsway Camp.
Police removed Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders, including K C Venugopal, Pawan Khera, K Suresh, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, and Imran Pratapgarhi, as the premises were cleared.
Gandhi had entered the Akashvani premises on Parliament Street after police stopped opposition MPs from marching towards the election office.
The opposition was protesting over allegations of “vote chori”, following media reports alleging irregularities in the functioning of the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
The sit-in continued for more than eight hours before police began clearing the premises and detaining protesters.
