Police have registered a criminal case against People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti, alleging assault on a police officer and rioting during a protest marking the anniversary of the revocation of Article 370, officials said on Thursday.
Police said the first information report (FIR) also names PDP President Mehbooba Mufti and other party workers in connection with a demonstration in Srinagar, where protesters allegedly attempted to breach barricades, block a main road and obstruct security personnel performing law and order duties.
According to police, Iltija Mufti assaulted an officer during the confrontation, causing injuries that required hospital treatment.
Authorities said the case has been registered under provisions relating to assault on a public servant, voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from duty and rioting.
Police said Iltija Mufti had been summoned to appear before investigators on Friday as the investigation continues.
The PDP has disputed the allegations, maintaining that its leaders and supporters were exercising their democratic right to peaceful protest against the 2019 constitutional changes and restrictions imposed ahead of the anniversary.
