Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged people across the country to take precautions against extreme heat, advising them to stay hydrated and avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun as temperatures continue to rise in several regions.

Speaking during his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, Modi said people should remain alert while stepping outdoors amid the ongoing hot weather conditions.

“With temperatures soaring across much of the country, it is important to take extra care. Stay hydrated. If you need to step out in the sun, do so cautiously and take necessary precautions,” he said.

“Keep drinking water. Don’t forget the guidelines issued by various government departments in this regard either,” he said.

Modi had made a similar appeal earlier in the week, calling on citizens to exercise maximum caution as large parts of the country continue to witness intense summer conditions.

During the broadcast, the prime minister also spoke about India’s mango season, describing the fruit as an integral part of summer across the country.

He said nearly every region has its own distinct mango variety, flavour and cultural association.

Referring to popular varieties from different states, Modi mentioned Alphonso from Maharashtra, Kesar from Gujarat, Dussehri from Uttar Pradesh, Langra from Varanasi, as well as Chausa and Malda from Bihar.

He also highlighted varieties from southern and eastern India, including Banganapalli, Totapuri, Neelam, Malgova, Himsagar and Suvarnarekha.

“The place changes, and so does the mango’s form, colour and taste,” Modi said, adding that India’s mango journey is increasingly expanding from villages to global markets.
