Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Friday and reiterated India’s call for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve conflicts, as the two leaders discussed developments in West Asia.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in New Delhi and was their second meeting in less than two weeks.
They had met during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek on August 31.
Modi thanked Pezeshkian for Iran’s continued high-level participation in BRICS meetings despite challenging circumstances and highlighted the grouping’s potential to promote resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability among countries of the Global South.
The prime minister also thanked Pezeshkian for attending the Leaders’ Session of the BRICS Business Forum.
The two leaders exchanged views on recent developments in West Asia, with Modi reiterating India’s position that disputes should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
He called for continued efforts to secure lasting peace and stability in the region, while safeguarding freedom of navigation and commerce and the safety of seafarers.
Modi and Pezeshkian also discussed bilateral ties and cooperation in multilateral forums, including BRICS.
