A massive fire broke out at a sanitary goods warehouse in the Kanlibagh area of Baramulla in north Kashmir on Monday evening, causing extensive damage and losses estimated at millions of rupees, officials and witnesses said.

The blaze engulfed a warehouse belonging to BK Traders, a sanitary goods trading firm owned by Ifthikar Ahmad Kakroo and Bilal Ahmad Kakroo, officials said.

Flames spread rapidly through the premises within minutes after the fire erupted, consuming large quantities of stored sanitary material, including imported and domestic goods, they said.

Several fire tenders were rushed to the site and firefighting operations were intensified with additional units brought in from nearby areas to contain the blaze.

However, the fire was still raging late into the evening, with firefighters attempting to prevent it from spreading to adjacent buildings.

Eyewitnesses said thick plumes of smoke were visible from a distance as panic spread in the area. Local residents also joined efforts to assist fire service personnel during the operation.

Officials said the exact cause of the fire had not yet been determined and a detailed assessment of the damage would be conducted after the blaze was fully extinguished.

No casualties or injuries had been reported till late evening, officials said.
