Police in Jammu and Kashmir have registered a fraud case against a man accused of cheating a couple in a land deal worth more than 500,000 rupees, officials said on Saturday.

The case was filed by the Special Crime Wing of the Crime Branch Jammu following a complaint from a resident of Bishnah alleging she and her husband were deceived while attempting to purchase agricultural land.

According to officials, the accused, identified as Arjun Kumar from the Bishnah area, allegedly misrepresented himself as the owner of a land parcel in Samba district and entered into an agreement to sell it for 600,000 rupees.

The complainant said the couple paid a total of about 562,000 rupees in instalments, including cash and digital transfers, but the accused neither transferred ownership nor handed over possession of the land.

Subsequent verification by revenue authorities indicated that the land was not registered in the accused’s name and had allegedly been sold to another buyer, officials said.

Police said a case has been registered under cheating provisions of the Indian Penal Code, and an investigation is underway.

Authorities said the accused is alleged to have acted with fraudulent intent, and reiterated their commitment to pursuing legal action in such cases.
