The Ladakh Police on Tuesday inducted 114 newly recruited Special Police Officers after they completed training at the Police Training School in Stongsar.
Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena attended the passing-out parade and valedictory function, where 99 serving personnel also completed pre-promotional courses.
The newly inducted SPOs will be deployed in the newly created districts of Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Drass and Zanskar to strengthen police manpower in remote areas.
The 99 personnel completing promotional courses included eight sub-inspectors training for promotion to inspector, nine assistant sub-inspectors for promotion to sub-inspector, 77 head constables for promotion to assistant sub-inspector and five police followers for induction as constables.
Saxena inspected the parade and presented awards to trainees and serving personnel. The chief drill inspector was also honoured.
The LG said policing in Ladakh presented particular challenges because of its large geographical spread, high-altitude locations, difficult terrain, extreme weather and dispersed settlements.
He said the induction of new personnel and professional advancement of serving officers would strengthen the force.
Saxena stressed the importance of legal knowledge, investigation skills, technology, discipline, integrity and professional conduct in modern policing.
He also inaugurated four building blocks containing 24 two-bedroom family quarters for eligible personnel from the rank of follower to head constable.
The quarters, built at a cost of Rs 11.04 crore, were designed for Ladakh’s harsh climatic conditions, officials said.
Saxena also launched the emblem, flag, logo and shoulder, cap and belt badges of the Ladakh Fire & Rescue Service.
The service’s official website was also launched, providing information on fire NOCs, safety guidelines, advisories, forms, regulations, emergency contacts and fire stations.
A Comprehensive Fire Safety Handbook for Ladakh was released, covering fire prevention, emergency response, evacuation, and rescue procedures.
Saxena said the police recruitment, professional training and welfare measures, together with improvements to fire and rescue services, would strengthen Ladakh’s security and emergency response system.
