The government has proposed an upgrade of the Anantnag-Dooru-Verinag road at an estimated cost of Rs 249.76 crore, with project reports already prepared for the 25-km stretch, officials told the Assembly.

The proposal is under consideration for funding through the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the government said in a written reply to a question by lawmaker Ghulam Ahmad Mir.

Authorities said two preliminary project reports have been prepared – one estimating Rs 69.76 crore for the first 10 km and another projecting Rs 180 crore for the remaining 15 km, which includes construction of a bridge at Nadoora.

Officials said that the initial stretch, currently about 5.5 meters wide, is in good condition and free of potholes.

The proposed upgrade follows a joint representation earlier this year by legislators Mir, Peerzada Mohammad Syed and Abdul Majeed Larmi, who urged the government to include the road under the central funding program.

In their submission, the lawmakers described the route as a key link running parallel to Srinagar-Jammu National Highway and serving thousands of commuters traveling to educational institutions and commercial hubs. 

They also flagged safety concerns, citing its narrow width and deteriorating condition in parts.

Deputy Chief Minister and Public Works Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary had earlier said proposals under central and institutional funding schemes were being examined, and invited recommendations from legislators for prioritising projects.

Officials said the proposal remains under review for inclusion in upcoming infrastructure plans.
